6 is the model imo. 5 conference champions + 1 at-large

Advantages:
1. College football is unique in that the regular season represents somewhat, a single elimination tournament. A playoff where each conference is guaranteed a representative, and a +1 available to highest ranked non-conference champion, keeps the quasi-single elimination aspect of college football intact, and the importance of each regular season game front and center.
2. Ensures that a single season for the select few, doesn't get too long in the tooth.
3. Stops the expansion modus operand dead in its tracks - aside from a ND or other independent who seeks multiple avenues for inclusion in a 6 team playoff. If ND joins the ACC, this in turn will strengthen the ACC's hand enough to matter longer term, before all hell breaks loose and the model moves to a 12 team format. A move to 12 before the ACC is deep enough to compete for slots = a very long lonely road for the ACC; A situation which could very well mean that the SEC gets even stronger, creating more of a gulf between themselves and the ACC. Also, a 12 team model prior to a ND move basically ensures that ND will never need to join the ACC; They'll have 7 very good reasons as to why they don't need to.
4. Top 2 seeds get a bye in this single elimination format. The other 4 get a play-in game.
5. Ensures that for most others, bowls invitations and playing in them actually means something going forward.
