Can the line and backers really be spread from the 3?

Doesn't one on one matchups really favor the D when they are defending only 150 yards of turf? Receivers really can't make stop and go or full out double moves and with the football field being 50yds wide the total square yards for the pass to land is 650, there aren't many ways lots of hands aren't around.
