Dishwasher opinions welcomed (inside)

We bought a new KitchenAid dishwasher several years ago. It has front controls and a stainless steel tub. I am entirely too lazy to look up the model number. We blew through the first motor (or was it a pump?) in less than a year. Since I could not be sure which part failed, I purchased the entire lower unit and replaced in house. That did not make it a year or two and it died. We purchased through Whirlpool's Inside Pass program through my job so I called to register my displeasure at the product and after some "negotiating" over the phone, they agreed it was weird this happened so many times and scheduled a technician to visit. During the visit, he discovered the pump was bad and replaced it (after describing the first issue, I think he said that was the pump also). Ordered a new one and installed for us.
Last night I go to run the dishwasher and it does the exact same thing. Symptoms: dishwasher will cut on and draw some water into the bottom, heating element comes on and gets hot, water does not spray, the control board makes the click to trigger that part of the cycle, but nothing happens. A few minutes later, you can hear water being drained into the disposal like normal.
My questions for you, my lounge DIY appliance experts are:
1. Has anyone had a similar experience with KitchenAid dishwashers or appliances in general?
2. What does it sound like to you is the issue? Think we just got a lemon?
I also checked the filter and trap in the bottom and all around the pivot point for the spray arm. We do not run deeply soiled loads, usually prespray/prewash before loading, and do not wash pots, pans, etc.
TIA.
