86, I think your question deserves better than the responses below.
It had a huge emotional lift of the fan base. From a national perspective The OSU was bigger. But it was away from Lane and the surge of energy from the crowd was missing. Same with FSU a few years ago. This UNC game was an outpouring of energy and emotions. A pent up release from pandemic shut downs and isolation, our first losing season in over 25 years and no bowl, a decade of general mediocrity that did not live up to expectations, and the thrashing of arguably our most hated rival over the past several years. That game was thrilling, and gut wrenching. But never too much. They made me believe again, that they would not lose in the end to a “better” team. At least for one game. I can’t recall a game like this. The night game in Lane against Miami in the early 2000s (forgot the year) may be similar because of the energy. The MV years and the run up. The 63-0 (something like that) against Syracuse in late 1990s. Those games stuck with us and created the kind of fan support we have frankly been losing slowly over time. Let’s hope this is the beginning of a long arc of national success again. That the students in the stands and kids watching TV become lifelong diehard fans like many of us did years ago. I don’t want to go back to losing the next game after a big win. Let’s roll, Hokies!
