September 26, 2009 - VT 31, #9 Miami 7

I remember the game as if it were yesterday. Miami was 2-0 with wins over FSU and GT (the eventual ACC Champion). We were coming off the last second win against Nebraska and were 2-1 with a first game 34-24 loss to Alabama (national champions that year). My future son-in-law was in law school with Bill Conaty (look him up if you are not familiar) and Bill got us 4 tickets through the coaching staff. I was given the tickets as a birthday present so I'm not sure if the tickets were complimentary or money changed hands. We were on the 50 yard-line, about 10 rows up behind the Miami bench. Best seats I ever had. It rained all day and all game. People were saying at the time that it was the wettest day ever in Blacksburg. The defense set up the first score with a sack/fumble of Jacory Harris, blocked a punt for a TD and set up another TD with an interception. Ryan Williams had a big day and Tyrod only attempted 9 passes due to the rain.
My son also got me tickets for my birthday for a Miami game in 2003. It was only 2 tickets so I took him to the game. We were on the west side on the 45-yard line, about halfway up and surrounded by older alumni. Second best seats I ever had. My son got a weekend pass from the Naval Academy where he was a first class-man (senior) so I picked him up in Annapolis and spent Friday night at Lake Monticello with family. Miami was ranked #2 and we were #10 but coming off our first loss of the season to WVU. The game was played on November 1 at night but the temperatures were in the 60s. The best weather you could ask for. This was one of Tech's legendary games and we won 31-7 with the defense creating turnovers and scores all night.
To this day, it is the only 2 Tech-Miami games that I have seen. Had the best seats I ever had and the only time my kids gave me Tech tickets. One game was the worst weather (for me), the other was the best weather for any game I've been to. Coincidentally, both games were 31-7.
