Yes...most versions are based on 3 or 4 (trivalent or quadrivalent) strains


They take a best guess at the likely most prevalent strains of influenza A and influenza B that will be circulating that year...

Good news is, that even if they "miss" on the guess, the vaccine still provides some help. A couple years back when the vaccine was a poor match, I got the flu despite being vaccinated. Good news is I was only REALLY sick for about 36 hours...maybe less...and the whole thing had run its course in less than a week with no treatment.
