Mack gets a lot of criticism for being a bad game day coach. I get it--there were two coaching decisions in his first two games back that very questionable, but there really haven't been any since then. As far as the suggestion that his natty should only be attributed to a special player in Vince Young, I'll point out that that USC team Texas beat had one of the best college football teams ever (including Reggie Bush), and that assembling talent is arguably more important to winning than x's and o's. There were plenty of tactician head coaches that year who weren't in the national championship game. Take Dabo for instance, is he some brilliant in-game coach? No--he ain't either. But he's got two national championships because he assembled rosters that had special players like Vince Young. I think Saban is probably a better in game coach than either Dabo or Mack, but we'll never really know because Bama has taken the same approach that has worked for decades--assemble the best talent you can and roll the ball out.

I'll point out two other things--first, Mack made it to a second national championship game in 2010 and was in the lead against Bama until McCoy got knocked out of the game. Second, as far as him not winning the ACC when he was here the first time, the same FSU program Vick couldn't beat in the national championship was the reason Mack doesn't have several ACC titles under his belt already. They were really really good.

I think his coordinators this time around are very good. I'm really impressed with how good they are with x's and o's, so notwithstanding Mack's history of in-game coaching decisions, we do have some really good tacticians on staff.
