Painting with a broad brush here, but my observation has been that a vast majority of SEC fans have very little concept of anything beyond their own conference. While that's not particularly noteworthy in and of itself, it also appears to be a viewpoint shared by their administrators and leaders.

I think it's fair to say that significant portions of the Virginia Tech fanbase have regional biases and/or a personal desire to be a part of the SEC. But the SEC's bluster and bravado (in conjunction with ESPN) doesn't play well at all in the rest of the country, and it's about time for them to be called on it.
