Afghanistan--beyond sad...
Every man woman and child in the U.S. "spent" some $7,000 for this outcome and the $$$ isn't the real tragedy. Tens of thousands of lives were lost for no real gain.
There was nothing else more the U.S. could have done...I just hope we learned our lesson so we don't go through this a 3rd time.
It's a reality check for the capabilities of the U.S. We think we can do anything and know everything--it's been very humbling.
I fear the Taliban now has a chip on their shoulder. They got the Americans out of Afghanistan. They broke every agreement we ever attempted to make. U.S. intelligence was non-existent leading up to 9/11 (great podcast called Blind Spot on this topic) and U.S. intelligence was amiss with how hard it would be for the Taliban to take over Afghanistan. I don't trust U.S. intelligence in telling me that the Taliban won't be a threat to the U.S.
The Taliban has about 150,000 members controlling a country the size of Texas--that's nothing.
