.if haiti & the dominican republic share an island, why does all the bad

shit always happen to haiti's half of the island and not to the dominican republic? like with today's earthquake and past quakes and HIV, you always hear about haiti being a mess, but nothing about the d.r. it's like the d.r. is on a completely different island.
