Here's another way to look at it...

UNC isn't anything approaching a powerhouse (they were 8-4 last year).
Preseason rankings are highly unreliable.
UNC lost all their skill position players on offense (sans the QB).
UNC's defense last year was worse than VT's (Defensive FEI of 90th v. 69th).
First game of season at night in Lane after a year of no crowds -- that's a HUGE homefield advantage for VT.

It is easy to spin arguments for and against.
