Here's the hidden brilliance of ND's ACC deal for the Irish
By tipping their hand that IF they join a conference, it will be the ACC and even putting it to paper, it really got the rest of the college football world off of their back with the whole "Notre Dame has to join a conference" mantra.
The B1G no longer cares if ND joins a conference, because the B1G won't be the one they choose. Plus the B1G benefits from the ACC being weak. And if the ACC folds in weakness, and ND IS forced to join a conference, the B1G will be the choice most likely. This has been a hundred years war between the B1G and ND, and B1G has the time and the resources to continue it.
The SEC no longer cares either since in the balance of power of things, the SEC probably likes the idea that the Irish AREN'T going to the B1G. And similar to the B1G, the SEC benefits from a weakened ACC (that giant sucking sound you here is big time recruits from the mid-Atlantic headed to the SEC). In fact, the SEC teamed up with ND to make the CFP-12 deal in which only the ACC was the real loser since it all but locked in ND independence in perpetuity unless something else changes.
And ND gave up next to nothing to "join". In any given year of ND's schedule pre-ACC deal, ND would probably play at least 3 ACC teams anyway. In fact, the year they signed the deal, they were playing FOUR. So when people say that Notre Dame gave up 5 games, in reality, Notre Dame was giving up just about 2 games. Meanwhile, ND basketball is in the premier basketball conference in the land.
The ACC gambled on this being a stepping stone. And they lost.
FWIW, I think ND can still be brought in to the ACC by offering them to bring in USC and allow both teams to create a "pod" of Western teams from the Pac-12 (or even the leftover BigXII--ND likes playing in Texas). You have to make Notre Dame an offer they can't refuse, and "Please save us because in the long run you will have to join the B1G" isn't going to cut it.
This ND move is like Nixon triangulation playing the Soviets and the ChiComs off of one another. 4-D chess. I don't know if it was on purpose or not, but it sure seems to have worked out for them.
