Balancing revenue to maintain competitiveness is not socialism
A sports league is the corporation and each pro team is a franchise. For McDonalds, franchises need to all maintain minimum standards and stay within corporate boundaries. A sports league needs to do this to remain entertaining, as the real competition is other forms of entertainment. Pro leagues do this through salary caps and revenue sharing, some better than others. College sports has not (as a whole, each league does share tv money) and that has made it less entertaining, IMO, as the rich franchises get richer.
