Story from the ninth grade.

We had to write an essay on what career we wanted in the future. I chose being a sports editor as I had, same as a poster below, taught myself to read in the sports section and knew it inch by inch, column by column on each and every day. As I was unable to find any sources with information on the duties of a sports editor, I just made up some sources and wrote my essay completely from personal knowledge. Some days after turning the paper in my English teacher asked me to stay after class. She claimed that I could not have written that by myself and had copied without citing much of the work. I had to swallow my pride and could not say that it was all from my own head. She said she would give me another chance but I could not receive anything higher than a B grade.

What did I do? I found some information on being a newspaper editor in general, copied it word-for-word, adding only "sports" in front of every instance of editor. Later when she handed it back she said that it was better, my "own work." Jeesh! I gave up any thoughts of being a sports editor in that moment. Probably for the best, Mrs. Winstead.
