By and large the things being brought up aren't newly offensive. They've been around awhile. That's part of the retort too, usually: "I've said that for ages and no one has said anything!"

What's new, though, is an increasing sense of empowerment and improvement and -- sometimes -- frustration by those raising the issue. They finally feel able -- by whatever means -- to make these requests and to speak out about what offends them.

Chances are that what many think of as woke and new are things that have bothered the minority group for decades -- they just have had to bite their tongue about it.
