I had to resort to the screw driver method once. It worked.
I had crushed the filter some too. Chain wrench crushed it to the point it was punctured too, so what the heck, hammered a long screw driver all the way through up to the handle. As close as possible to the threaded end of the filter. It did rip up the filter some more, but eventually came off. Threads were fine. Helping a friend with a '79 Camero that had been neglected. Probably 2 years without a filter change.
