Always considered very early rap to be creative

(although admittedly, I wasn't an immediate fan), but then it seemed to go downhill into nothing more than bad versions of Barry White music.

At first, it seemed to be closer to old CSN&Y protest music than anything else as far as it's intent. The songs had a purpose. Then as the medium heated up, sex and drugs took it over, and at that point I have to agree with some on here. Rap and music in the same phrase seemed like an oxymoron. Denigrating women and promoting violence and drugs just weren't the best storylines for "music". I know it was supposed to reflect real life, but the songs were not protesting those things, but rather glorifying them. Can't say I was a fan.

I do agree some of it is creative and interesting if you listen, but some of it is straight up garbage, too. Plus what can I say? I like a singing voice and harmonies more than recitations.

And Nanci Griffith for today.
