I use Arlo. Wireless cameras can be recharged so you don't have to


Run wires. Mine are set to record for 10 seconds when motion is detected but can also be set to activate on sound as well.
There is no recurring cost and it saves my videos for 5 days... But I think you can pay for a service and that lets you save files forever.
I don't need it to alert me to anything, but it can. If I turned on alerts then I'd get an alert every night when the deer walk by or whenever a car drives past. I can also turn on a very loud alarm if I want to from my phone.
