Bingo. JJ went down and part of the team “didn’t like” Willis.
Part of the team gave up not after but DURING that game. Certain guys on both sides of the ball. It was really disappointing to see but I didn’t know everything at the time. I probably still don’t know everything, but a lot of us know more now than we knew then. And of course Trevon’s dismissal only caused some of those same guys to dig in further and take an anti-Willis/anti-Fuente attitude. It is freaking AMAZING that we somehow beat UVA. My guess is that some of the guys stepped up because they didn’t want to hear crap from their UVA buddies in NOVA during winter break.
But yes I believe VT lost something in Norfolk that it hasn’t yet gotten back (and I’m not just talking about several jock straps). Some heart and soul was lost there. Trust between Fu and part of the locker room, already strained, went completely out the window. Even though those guys are all or mostly gone now, the program still seems haunted by the loss.
