If a guy is even slightly ready to play, we ain't redshirting him

Before, if a team was on the fence about whether a true freshmen could contribute immediately, it felt like the default decision was to play it safe and redshirt him. Nowadays, however, with the constant churn of guys in and out of the portal, it's the opposite: if a guy can help you win games even in some small way, by all means play him immediately. Teams have no idea whether that guy will be around next season.

The culture of instant gratification and looking out for oneself cuts both ways. As the saying goes, loyalty is a two-way street. If players have the option to bolt for another team with no penalty, don't expect teams to allow them to sit over there on the bench for an entire year eating up a scholarship.
