Women's Lacrosse coaching possibilities
I think Jacksonville's Mindy McCord will get a hard look. She received her Master's degree from Tech and started the Tech women's club lacrosse team when she was here. She's a Westminster, Maryland native and knows the recruiting areas very well. She had Jacksonville University in the Top 15 most of the season. She'd be a great hire.
Christine Halfpenny from Notre Dame would be hard to pull away from Notre Dame but Halfpenny played lacrosse at Tech back in our A-10 days and graduated in 1999. That would be a major coaching hire if Babcock could pull that off.
There are also a few other head coaching candidates from the A-10 and CAA that Babcock should look at. I would even consider a few assistant coaches from perennial top 10 programs. I'm surprised that John Sung resigned. He's a Midwest guy who will probably end up back coaching in the Big 10 a few years up the road. He was always considered a program builder. He had Tech in the Top 10 and with a 14-7 record and 5-2 ACC record in 2018. He got Tech to the NCAA WLAX Tournament's 2nd round that year. He showed that Tech could win in the ACC. It was a disappointed 2021 season with COVID and major injuries and departures of a few underclass starters. The team was definitely a Top 20 program in the final weeks of the season finishing #21 in the Inside Women's Lacrosse Poll and #22 in the IWLCA Poll despite a losing record. Sung was never afraid to play a demanding schedule. Tech had one of the hardest SOS of any team in 2021. I hope the next coaching hire can take Tech to the next level. Sung rebuilt the program and if the new coach can keep the present roster and key recruits, Tech may be back in the NCAA playoffs in a few years. [Post edited by Old Line Hokie at 05/12/2021 4:23PM]
