They're getting their minimum wage whether or not the ice cream machine works, so there isn't a lot of motivation to make it work. Even simple tasks get shirked if they are inconvenient, and relatively complex ones like this machine are a bridge way too far.

I flipped burgers back in my teen days (pre-Taylor I would expect) and we had to take apart and manually clean the machines nightly. The catch was that not everyone knew how to reassemble them. So if the closing crew didn't have someone who did, that bucket of parts would just sit there however long into the next day it took before someone came on shift who knew how to put that thing back together
