I struggle to see how it would even be considered a mistake


Sure, guys who leave school early to go pro, fail to thrive, and never go back for their degree are blowing a great opportunity.

Merely changing schools does not present nearly the same problem. If a kid was on track to graduate at School A, he will likely remain on track to graduate at School B. If the playing time opportunity he thought he was transferring in to fails to materialize, well, maybe that's a blown chance. But mostly those guys aren't going to have much of a post-collegiate sports career anyway, so in the grand scheme of things it's not a horrible lifetime mistake.
