You are right that the Pac-12 would have options available to it

if it wanted to expand into either the Pac-14 or Pac-16. I will say that the CA schools would have a problem with BYU because of its religious affiliation and the impact it has on academics (i.e. BYU has issues with certain research topics and academic topics for religious reasons) as well as athletics (i.e. no games played on Sunday). I am not sure if the other members, particularly the ones on the Pacific Coast, share the same views as the CA schools or not. Given that the PAC-12 already has 4 CA members, I am not sure if there is any interest in adding a 5th and/or 6th member or not.

Something to keep in mind is that the PAC-12 does have protected cross-division games in football. Specifically I am referring to the 4 CA get to play each other every year in football which means for the 4 CA schools that 2 of the cross-division games are reserved for the 2 other CA schools in the other division. Another thing to keep in mind is that if the PAC-12 did expand into the PAC-16, then the original PAC-8 (2 WA schools, 2 OR schools, and 4 CA schools) would probably be the West Division. While the 8 expansion schools would make up the East Division. It may be another reason the PAC-12 wouldn't consider adding more CA schools and Hawai'i to the conference.
