Walking Dead (I know, who cares anymore)

Please explain how somebody can detonate a grenade, blow themselves to hundreds of bits --- yet the 5 people surrounding that person (all within 5-10 feet) can simply "get down", and avoid any damage? Other than wiping some blood & guts off their shoulder.
