Yep, definitely white-knuckles, it didn't help you were pretty close to
the water, more of that out in the middle of the ocean/nowhere feel, look at the friggn' guard rail didn't seem like much between you and that water.
Yeah, I was sent to Ft Lauderdale for SEL training, you know, that "mini" computer that was a lot cheaper than those DEC PDP-11s. Amazing how small those computer got!!! (I guess that is sarcasm, but was, of course, true at the time) drove down from Lauderdale so you're already a couple hours into the trip and a little frazzled before you got to that stretch of the road. I'm sure I had a compact rental, so that helped.
Key West was pretty cool but it has changed a lot since then and when I went again, one of the VT Orange bowl games. Early 80's? Couple hippie jugglers, smattering of people to watch the sunset, at the time of the OB game, two or three huge cruiseships semi blocking the view.
