I think you are referring to John Wetzel, not Wenzel.

John Wetzel was a very good basketball player at VT. He also played for several years in the NBA. Once he finished the NBA, he returned to VT to finish his degree. While at VT, he took on the job of starting the women's basketball team, and coached them for their initial year. He returned to the NBA as an assistant coach, and was later made an NBA head coach.
