Answer is two fold.


In a dual, whichever team gets odd matches (1,3,5,7,9) or even (2,4,6,8,10) at beginning gets option in second period. Then option goes to other team in 3rd period. You can pick bottom, top or neutral.

In a trny, the ref flips a disk at end of 1st to decide red/green gets first choice to begin 2nd.
