It would kill recruiting and may encourage out-transfers. That said, it goes through 2024, so he/we have 1 (maybe 2) season to "right the ship" before talks begin....
I get what saying though and hate the idea of paying someone millions if fired...I think Mack Brown's contract is extended 1 year at a time (but 2-3 years out). To be fair, FU has dealt with a fairly disruptive time period, but (IMO) made a crucial (maybe critical) mistake NOT nurturing HS coach relationships within 400 mile bread&butter region. I hope that Fu, Jham (even Corn:-)) and crew get VT back on-track...Definitely believe we'll see an improved defense this year, but the competition has improved too.
