Marvel has been really good at condensing characters' backstories and explaining things relatively quickly to get casual fans invested. Look at Thanos. Everyone can tell you who he is now, even if they've never read a comic. Up until Infinity War, all the MCU showed us was that he was a big purple guy that wanted the Infinity Stones. For what? Who knew? I think it's cool that Marvel takes lesser known characters and generally knocks it out of the park.
