Both outstanding players in their own right, I'd pick Ray because of the amount of playing responsibility he had when Doors played live.... no bass player typically, so he had to play majority of bass lines on Fender Rhodes bass keys left hand, while simultaneously keeping big strong melodies going on right hand, separate keyboard. That's tough.

McDonald outstanding player, writer, singer, arranger, but he always had a massive full band with super strong bass players. "Takin' it to the Streets".... sheesh, MM brought that to the Doobies almost completely finished and arranged. One of my all time favorites. Great player and writer.

Doors chose to play like they did, nobody forced them to not use a bass player live. But it was still heavy responsibility on RM.
