First downs is just a rhetorical example. I'd counter your example

with using the highest individual rushing yards by a player, or passing yardage by a QB. That is just about equivalent to one guy beating another, all things being equal, by 2 pts instead of 1.

FWIW, I think football should have kept the tie, because it gets decided in one possession most times, after 60 minutes of even play.

In some sports, a tie should just be a tie.
