The corner flag is there to determine if the ball went out on the sideline;

resulting in a throw-in ... or across the end line; resulting in a corner kick or goal kick (depending on who touched it last).

Similar to a pylon in football to determine a touchdown or out of bounds.
Or the foul pole in baseball is used to determine a home run or just a foul ball.
