OK computer nerds. Why isn't my old display working with new motherboard?

Using the HDMI 1.4b output on motherboard. Integrated Intel Graphics

Display is an old Samsung Syncmaster. Works fine when hooked up to another computer via HDMI. HDMI cable also works fine between the old Samsung and another computer.

New motherboard HDMI 1.4b output works fine when hooked up to another (newer) Samsung display.

Maybe it has something to do with different variants of HDMI, but I'd assume that all variants are backward compatible.
