I dont know what your personnel is like...

But running the Gonzaga continuity motion P&R is a great way to teach kids to play in HS so kudos to you

As far as the difference for VT, I would imagine (again, I dont know your personnel) that VT having established weapons both at the rim and at the 3 point line is a little different than your typical high school program.

I 100% agree that for HS ball the constant goal should be to inch the ball closer and closer to the rim to increase your chances of making a good shot. You can be patient with it due to a lack of a shot clock.

VT and college in general dont have that luxury, so the decisions on whether to hit the roll man or throw back to the pop have to be made very quickly.

For some, like Justin Robinson, those decisions are instinctive. For Bede, he has to be a tad more deliberate in what he wants to do. Defenses play him differently than they do J-Rob. It also helps that J-Rob always had 1 read, and he could make a quick decision off 1 read with the ball in his hands. For Bede, there are reads of primary and secondary defenders of the player he is passing to, as well as primary defenders of himself and the pop.

Cattoor seems to be a little more instinctive with those reads, he just ismt super confident yet. Alleyne can be instinctive but inconsistent at times.

You hit the nail on the head with high school defenders though. Defensive schemes lag way behind offense in high school. Its why freshmen struggle to defend at the college level, despite obviously having played defense before...there's just a lot more that goes into defending as a team than most coaches can teach effectively to 15-18 year olds.

So those lanes are a bit easier to find, and it pays more to take chances on those lanes because thats the best spot on the floor. If you can defend a tiny bit, then you can be assured youll have more opportunities to hit those shots.

If I were a betting man, having never seen your team, I would bet you typically beat teams who are of similar skill level to your team fairly soundly, but your players might not be as confident to hit those rolls when they play against better athletes or bigger teams...is that a fair statement? That's just usually how it goes, but there is certainly room for nuance.
