What would you do? Hospital / COVID mixup communication fubar
Sorry, have to throw out this to the lounge just because it's so crazy.
Closest family friends of ours all got COVID late last week.
Varying symptoms, including husband in that family having extreme head congestion, loss of taste/smell, but no fever or chest congestion.
Wife, though, had severe chest congestion and hit a low very early Saturday morning and decided it was time to go to the ER. They admitted her and she's been there ever since. She's been on oxygen and some experimental drugs but, seemed to be doing better as of last night.
This morning, at 7am, a nurse calls my buddy, the husband... she confirmed he was Mr. "Smith" married to "Ms Smith".... yes.... we are sorry to inform you that she took a turn for the worse and died a short time ago."
My buddy obviously freaked out and asked all kinds of questions which the nurse answered, then started going through next steps re: how to claim her body, etc.
After what he says was at least 5 minutes, he said the nurse suddenly stopped talking.... there was a long pause.... then "Mr. "Smith" I am sorry but I have made a mistake."
She had grabbed the wrong chart. And made the wrong freaking phone call, to the wrong person.
I can only imagine what our health care workers are going through amidst COVID but dang that's about as massive a fubar-up as I can imagine.
Nurse's supervisor called him to apologize, gave him her cell number to call anytime, etc. Probably the right response, given the circumstances.
But, dang. That's super messed up. I just can't stop thinking about what it would be like to go through that. Or, how I would respond.
