Most current routers do have a VPN option(s). My router has 3 (i think) flavors of VPN and it works like a charm. On the road, I can VPN in and use AndSMB to get any file on my home network.

I think I fiddled with setting up VPN on a PC but it was more difficult to setup than the router VPN.

EDIT - I don't use VPN to mask my IP, I just use it when on the road to connect to my home network.
