My father in law ran the main battery plot for a heavy cruiser in WW2.
He said the Japanese really feared our heavy guns and were amazed at our accuracy. They definitely knew the spotter planes were part of the problem and would do everything they could to bring them down. If those planes returned, they were swiss cheese. He never wanted to get to know those pilots.
By the way, I cold be wrong on the terminology for his station. Over cocktails he would tell a lot of great WW2 stories.
