I'd see what their lease says...

I've never had a lease that said the tenant was responsible for repairs that would be considered normal wear and tear. What happens when the stove conks out? Do they have to replace it? Who get's ownership of the stove if they move out in a year?

Sounds like your parents just have a lazy and potentially unethical landlord.
