It was originally against the law to use it for identification


only for social security and tax ID. It's funny that folks back then understood the dangers of creating a national ID system, lessons which seem to have been forgotten which we've seen the results in recent years with ID theft and certain other countries stealing large computer data bases which are easy to correlate.

Paradoxically, it's become less useful as an ID since there is so much fraud going on with using it so it may be returning to its original use only.
