Are they just using this while in high school, or will it be a college car?

But seriously, I think you're on the right track. I would tend to lean towards (1) Toyota, then (1A) Honda, then (2) the remaining Japanese autos.

A private sale is OK, as long as the seller can show a full service history. Ask to see the stack of oil change & other service receipts.
