You can remove a car from your insurance anytime you like, however the DMV

requires insurance on a vehicle with active tags, and if they are made aware there is no insurance, they can suspend your license, require you to file an SR-22, pay a reinstatement fee, etc. We always advise our customers to either turn the tags in at a DMV, which is just about impossible these days, or go online to DMVnow.com, and deactivate the tags.
