Well, it costs a fortune, that's for sure. I'm pretty sure that SOFL is


the only place that has these strict codes. And that explains the windows breaking in that casino built in 2004, now that I think of it. Windows installed to code won't break out here. They can crack, when impacted hard enough, and have to be replaced (again, very costly), but they won't fail, and won't let in the wind or water (or burglars, for that matter). Doors on hinges are required to open out, which allows reinforced jambs to keep them from being blown in. The whole structure must be seamlessly tied together sufficiently from cap rock to roof ties. It goes on and on. I've seen the "CBS" (concrete block) construction up close. Every 4th block must be rebar and concrete filled, and a band of rebar and concrete must top each floor and tie all the way down to the foundation or piers. The 3/4 plywood forms alone is a huge cost. Costs of new construction are usually around $300 per foot for a basic home.
