is more pressing now because the headquarters and member institutions failed to plan for a disaster(member institutions) or squandered(NCAA) the safety net predecessors had provided. Schools spent every last penny in an arms race without providing reserves for a rainy day. Some, probably rightly, believed their fans were the rainy day reserve and would just dig deeper. Some have probably overestimated their base. The NCAA spent the reserves they had funding lawsuits and providing subsidies to schools for COLA without adjusting operating expenses(staff salaries and perks the largest) or reducing NCAA tourney payouts to rebuild depleted reserves. The bills will now be coming due.
