on, remote stays in the cradle mounted by the wall switch. I always control the fan with the phone app. In my case the fan light isn't the primary light in the room so the light rarely gets used, but the remote is always by the light switch if needed.

A couple cool things about the smart fan. It has a timer function, so I just set the timer and don't have to remember to turn it off when I go to bed in the evening. It also has a "breeze" function where the fan speed varies, kinda like an outdoor breeze. But the fan has also operated mysteriously a couple times that I haven't figured out. On at least one occasion, the timer didn't turn the fan off (maybe the phone was out of range?), and one time the fan had turned on mysteriously (my internet was dropping frequently at the same time, so may be related). I can also reverse the direction from my phone/remote if you like running the fan in reverse during winter.
