Maybe he is employing the Al Groh strategy

Al Groh was the coach at UVA. He characterized himself as "playing chess" while VT and Beamer were "playing checkers". It did not turn out well for him.

Perhaps he thinks he can trump the other conferences by leaping ahead to the obvious conclusion. I believe it is going to turn out that the answer is not as obvious as he thought it was.
