My kids are grown, so this opinion is totally from 20/20 hindsight. I know how tough it is when sports are demanding presence and you are afraid your kid is going to miss out if he/she doesn't attend.

Here's what I learned. If your kid is a top 10% player you can do anything you want any no consequences. Even if your kid doesn't attend but 40% of the practices/games, when he is there he will play. He/she will take another kid's spot at tryouts, games etc even if that other kid did everything right and is a decent player.

The kids in the top 10% probably won't go if their parents aren't crazy. Why risk it? The kids in the bottom 10% won't go because why risk it? The other 80% of the kids will go because they think they have to to keep their spot on the team. See my thoughts above. I'm not sure it matters.

So many families spend thousands of dollars in travel teams because they think their kid is going to get a college scholarship, but most kids don't get a scholarship and end up hating the sport that they over played their whole childhood. I think if you ditched the travel team and put the money each year in a college fund, your kid will come out ahead and be more well rounded.

Well, that was more than I intended to type, and I'm not implying that you are one of the parents that is pushing their kid in the sport. I just kind of went off on a tangent. Bottom line for me is that I wouldn't go to the meet. lol
