1957 Vaccine - Looking for Information

Just looking for some information/clarification here.

We constantly hear that a vaccine will take until early next year (best case) to develop for Covid-19.

However, back in 1957, we produced 40 million doses in 4 months for a similar virus and it was proven to have saved many lives. Is this simply due to required phased trial approach required today or is there something more to it with Covid-19?

I know I would be willing to get the one of the vaccines now prior to completion of phase III trial and I am sure many others would as well. If it worked so well in 1957, why can't it work now especially given how far science has come?
