Always treat one as it is loaded, keep it pointed in a safe direction...


...and keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire the weapon.

I highly recommend both firearm safety and CCW classes. I would also try a number of different pistols before settling in on one. Many ranges do offer rentals to supplement friends who have a selection. We are partial to Glocks but there are many other good pistols out there. Also consider what your intent is. Home defense? Carry? Target shooting?
