Sounds like they needed to "old school" load test that battery.
I used one of the "old school" Carbon Pile load testing machines when I was taking classes at TCC, and it would definitely tell you how many CCAs a battery is producing. Maybe the new "electronic gizmo" devices let some issues "slip through the cracks."
If you want to truly know if a battery is good, put it on a Carbon Pile Load Tester.
